Opis kursu

The knowledge contained in the course can be used to broaden your orientation in relation to contemporary socio-political processes and is necessary to study more advanced issues in the field of contemporary political systems.


PRELIMINARY REQUIREMENTS

Interest in the subject of the course and knowledge of English at a minimum level of B2.


COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • You will understand the essence of democratic problems.
  • You will learn to explain the difference between the realistic and ideal nature of democracy.
  • You will learn what are the most important challenges facing modern democratic systems..
  • You will discover the threats to democracy.
  • You will be able to independently identify the conditions that influence the advantageous development of democracy.
  • You will learn to analyze data associated with the functioning of selected phenomena in relation to democratic reality.
  • You will be able to both critically assess the weaknesses of democracy and objectively assess its strengths.

SUBJECT MATTERS

MODULE 1
Democracy from a historical and theoretical perspective

The first module presents issues related to the historical and theoretical approach to democracy.

MODULE 2
The values of democracy

The second module presents the value systems of democratic governments.

MODULE 3
Democratic political systems

In the third module various democratic political systems were presented.

MODULE 4
The socio-economic environment of contemporary democracy

The fourth module presents issues related to the socio-economic environment of modern democracy.

MODULE 5
Democracy and the challenges of the contemporary world

The fifth module presents the challenges of the modern world faced by democracy today.

MODULE 6
Threats to contemporary democracy

The sixth module presents the threats faced by modern democracy.


PASSING CONDITIONS

To pass the course, it is necessary to provide a minimum of 60%. The score is calculated on the basis of a weighted average. The control exercises have a weighting of 40% and the final exam has a weighting of 60%.


CONDITIONS FOR RECEIVING A CERTIFICATE

To receive a certificate, you must complete and pass the course.


COURSE STAFF

Post-doctoral degree in social sciences; research and teaching employee at the University of Economics and Humanities in Warsaw; long-term employee of the University of Warsaw; from 2000, scientific secretary of the Political Science Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences; since 2012 also a specialist member of the KNP PAN; member of the editorial board of Przegląd Europejski; participant in the exchange of academic teachers under the Erasmus Program and lecturer during training for candidates for EU-EPSO officials; she gave papers at national and international conferences, including in Nicosia; contractor and co-contractor of research projects of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education; as part of promoting knowledge in the field of political science, she gave lectures for the Warsaw Center for Educational and Social Innovation and Training and for the MCDN.

Research interests:

The process of European integration, including research on the EU institutional system; contemporary democracy and its dilemmas
