SAFETY MANAGEMENT IN CIVIL AVIATION

The course is intended for graduate students. It's a specialized subject in the field of aviation. As a result of the e-learning process, the participant will acquire the skills and competencies to implement and maintain a safety management system (SMS) in aviation organizations at the international, EU, and national levels. Through a system of specially prepared teaching modules, tests and exercises, the participant will obtain theoretical and practical preparation for work in aviation organizations with an aviation safety management system. The participant will also gain analytical competencies, including the ability to solve problems related to the investigation of air incidents and accidents, their causes, and the formulation of recommendations. In addition, the participant will also acquire competencies in operational risk management, which is one of the components of aviation safety management.



WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

The main objective of the course is to obtain competencies and qualifications in aviation safety management which are required and important in the labor market, economy and society. We assume that by providing basic knowledge and skills in the field of SMS, we will achieve the end result of enhancing the attractiveness of our graduates in the labor market.

It should be emphasized that the objectives of the course in terms of knowledge, skills, and competencies are:

  • gaining knowledge about the legal requirements for the functioning of the aviation safety management system (SMS),
  • acquiring knowledge about the aviation safety management system at the international, EU, and national levels,
  • gaining knowledge about the security systems of the airport managing body and the air operator,
  • expanding knowledge and acquiring basic skills to analyze the causes of air incidents and identify threats using selected flight safety models,
  • expanding knowledge on the importance of correct communication in aviation and the principles of using correct communication used by flight and cabin crews, as well as all air operations involved in the process,
  • acquiring knowledge and basic skills to make comprehensive risk assessments, taking into account the interaction of different types of risk, and the ability to forecast and profile aviation organizations for the purposes of safety risk assessment,
  • expanding knowledge on the importance of organizational culture in aviation.

 



SYLLABUS



REQUIREMENTS

For those who study a second degree toward aviation. The competencies that the participant should have:

  • analytical skills, including the ability to solve problems with regard to the causes of air accidents,
  • Language (English - advanced).


TERMS OF COURSE ASSESSMENT

There are various types of activity that are assessed in the course:

  • Checking knowledge on the basis of tests, which are placed inside selected modules and are there to help consolidate knowledge. Their weight in the final assessment is 25%.
  • A final test summarizing the entire course. Its weight in the final evaluation is 50%.
  • Analysis of the causes of selected air accidents on the basis of selected flight safety models in writing (2 papers). Weight in the final grade: 25%.

The tests consist of 8-10 multiple-choice questions, the answers to which can be found in the lessons. The course participant may have only 2 attempts when answering each question in the test. The end of the entire course ends with a final test of knowledge on the topics covered throughout the course. In order to pass the course, it is necessary to achieve a threshold of over 60% of all possible points. Those who achieve a score of at least 61% of all tests will receive a course completion certificate.

Assistant professor at the Institute of Civil Aviation Management, Faculty of Management and Command, Academy of the Art of Warfare. Researcher and teacher. Previously, many years of aviation practice: cabin crew instructor in the field of emergency procedures, work on board of various types of aircraft in Polish and foreign airlines. Author of monographs and scientific articles on aviation-related topics: aviation safety management, cabin crew, air terrorism.
