How to Use Commas to Give Meaning to Your Sentences: About Polish Punctuation in a Friendly Way

The aim of the course „How to use commas to give meaning to your sentences: about Polish punctuation in a friendly way“ is to improve your practical punctuation skills. In this course you will learn selected rules of punctuation and through exercises you will improve your skills in using punctuation marks (mainly commas). You will also improve your ability to recognize and correct punctuation errors. If you see a need to improve your fluency in Polish writing, you've come to the right place. Feel free to make yourself comfortable!

My name is Małgorzata Bortliczek. I am a Polish philologist and linguist. You are welcome to take part in the course "How to use commas to give meaning to your sentences: about Polish punctuation in a friendly way".

INTRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS

The following technical skills are required for the course:

  COURSE AIMS

• To draw attention to the norms governing the use of commas in Polish language texts.
• To characterize the function of the comma and other punctuation marks.
• To raise awareness of the fact that the location of the comma is primarily determined by the structure of the sentence.

MEDIATE ISSUES

MODULE 1

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Characteristics of the course assumptions and its contents, as well as a test which will allow you to check your initial punctuation skills.

MODULE 2

INTERPUNCTIONAL SIGNS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

Presentation of selected punctuation marks present in Polish written language and exercises allowing you to consolidate your ability to use the marks mentioned.

MODULE 3

THE MOST USED INTERPUNCTION MARKS – A COMMA AND A FULL STOP

Information and exercises concerned with usage of a period – the second most common punctuation mark.

MODULE 4

A COMMA – THE BUSIEST PUNCTUATION MARK

Exercises in using a comma, as well as the rules governing punctuation of lists in scientific and popular science texts.

MODULE 5

SELECTED MYTHS CONCERNING PUNCTUATION

An overview of selected myths concerning punctuation and syntactic basis of dispelling them.

MODULE 6

A COMMA AND SENTENCE STRUCTURE

Exercises in indicating predicates and distributing commas in complex and compound sentences.

MODULE 7

A COMMA AND SELECTED CONJUNCTIVE WORDS

Presentation of selected indicators of conjunction. Accumulation of these indicators and relationship between them may cause difficulty in punctuating correctly.

MODULE 8

FINAL TEST

Summary of a course including a final test which serves to verify skills acquired during a course.

CONDITIONS OF CERTIFICATION

There are four types of tasks in the course:

1. Pre-test (not graded).
2. Final test (subject to grading).
3. Quizzes (graded). Quizzes occur in each module (inside the lesson) and are used to practice interpreting skills.
4. An introductory forum and two discussion forums (ongoing throughout the course). The participant is invited to speak in the available discussion forums, but participation is not assessed.

To obtain a certificate of course completion at least 60% of your answers must be correct. Your activity should include answers to quiz questions and a final test. Other forms of course activities (e.g. initial test) are recommended but do not contribute to the overall course score.

CONDITIONS FOR RECEIVING A CERTIFICATE

Certification of completion of this course may be obtained by satisfying the requirements specified under CONDITIONS OF CERTIFICATION.
